A Message to BU Students

Parikrma Staff

Hello, thank you for taking a bit of time to read this page. That is me in the upper left corner of the photo. I’m the tall dark-haired guy wearing the yellow shirt. That shirt was originally white, but the Bangalorian dust and the dry sun stained it a lovely off-yellow. My name is Deren Temel. I graduated from BU 12′ with a major in International Relations.

Just two years ago, I was taking the same course that you are currently taking with Professor Chatterjee-Miller. After graduating, I volunteered for six months with an NGO in Bangalore, India. I’d like to share my experience and show you where to find a meaningful intense life experience after University and before your careers begin. It was a fellow BU student taking this South Asian course who leaned across their desk and introduced me to the Parikrma Foundation. I feel inclined to invite you all to volunteer with this exciting and meaningful cause.

Don’t worry! You don’t have to read much more. I will present a series of Youtube videos to introduce the Parikrma Humanity Foundation; an NGO that feeds and educates thousands of Bangalore’s poorest children. After the three introductory videos, I prepared a fourth video about my experience with the students and fellow volunteers at Parikrma.

Volunteering with Parikrma is a chance for you to make a meaningful impact on a young person, while having the adventure of a life time in, one of India’s most modern, Bangalore.

This first video is The Parikrma Story. A complete overview of the foundation, its origins, operations, and successes . This video is high-tech, professional, and entertaining

The Parikrma Story

Thank you for watching The Parikrma Story, now that you have a general idea of the school’s mission. I’d like to present you a TEDxIndia speech given by the founder Shukla Bose. This video highlights the challenges facing Bangalore’s poorest communities and the early struggles in Parikrma’s development. The video is roughly seventeen minutes long.

PS.If you do volunteer at Parikrma you are certain to have close contact with Mrs. Bose. She is active in the daily workings of the foundation. Having one of India’s honorary citizens Shukla Bose as a part of your network is quite a resume booster for those aiming for careers in South Asia, Education, or International Relations.

TEDxIndia Shukla Bose: Teaching One Child at a Time

Thank you for watching Shukla Bose: Teaching One Child at a Time. The next video is a amateur documentary made by a fellow volunteer titled, I Dropped Out of School When I was Ten Years Old.  This video has interviews with older students about the challenges they face in pursuing their education. The video also carries the personal account of one volunteer’s experience at Parikrma.  ( 3 mins.)

I Dropped Out of School When I was Ten Years Old.

If you are interested in hearing about the experience of volunteering the next video is my personal account of spending six months in a slum school in Bangalore. I will share photos and stories of the students and a bit about the experience of volunteering. If you are interested in more details about volunteer accommodation, volunteering in general, and how to get your application started please E-mail me at derentemel@yahoo.com
